Ace Stamp Auctions Sale number 5 was not only our biggest at 950 lots but also the best so far with 80% of the lots sold and 94% of total estimates realised. We had 47 different vendors giving a great cross section of material and my sincere thanks to all those that entrusted their material to me.
A strong turnout in the room of 104 bidders ensured active bidding throughout the sale under the hammer of David Lynch. A further 140+ postal bidders resulted in strong prices across the board. The ever popular "box lots" got everyone actively bidding early on with the Collections section not far behind. The "Million" stamp lot sold for $360 with the winning bidder now not available for social functions for at least 2 years!
The West Australian Government Gazette sold for $2250 while the banknotes and War Savings Certificates were also popular. A neat Savings Bank Onslow WA postmark sold for $260 with only 4 known examples and the 1962 Commonwealth Games PO postmark test impression sheet complete with official poster was actively pesuewd resulting in $210. British Commonwealth was popular with a specialised section of Samoan booklets being a complete sellout. Airmail covers, including modern flights, continue to do well with a lot of 17 Concorde covers quickly bid up from $250 to $540.
My thanks to all those that helped on the day including Marc for the new IT system which worked very well on its first outing and my wife Christine who not only assisted behind the scenes but served lunch to the 140 people in attendance.
On an additional note for local collectors, I have recently published a booklet, Stamping WA 2010 which lists all the WA stamp clubs & societies along with a 2010 calendar of events. Please email or telephone me to receive one by post. I produced and financed this booklet to encourage as many collectors as possible to join or attend their local club. The Western Australian Philatelic Council works with the committees of these clubs, all of which are volunteers, to promote, encourage & share their enthusiasm of the hobby. It is a golden opportunity to add to your collection, learn more and share your knowledge with other collectors. So please join a stamp club or even two!
If you wish to submit lots in the August sale, please contact me in June to arrange. I will be away for all of May attending various stamp shows in both London and Europe. Furthermore we continue to be free of any Buyers Premium hence higher prices realised, so more to you, the vendor. We are happy to receive box lots, single lots or specialised collections, all will be dealt with care and professionalism.
