Singapore 1954 (10th Jan) BOAC de Havilland Comet Flight 781 crashed into the sea near Elba Island, off the Italian coast, after suffering an explosive decompression at altitude. All 35 people on board were killed. Some mail was salvaged incl this Air Mail env with stamp missing but Dempsey Road Singapore 8 JAN 54 cds still clearly visible with neighbouring boxed "DAMAGED BY SEA-WATER" cachet in black. "Forces Air Mail' in m/s at top & complete with original 5-page letter of same date also water damaged. Off-set on reverse caused by the sea water shows letter underneath had a "COMMAND PAY OFFICE" cachet with 10c KGVI also tied by Singapore cds. A scarce survivor of this crash.
