1936 (10th May) "The Willard Hotel Washington D.C. printed env with matching letterhead enclosure with 1c Washington, 20c Golden Gate & 25c TransPacific Airmail tied by Washington DC pmk & endorsed "VIA ZEPPELIN TO EUROPE THENCE AIR MAIL TO AUSTRALIA" with Hindenburg requisite cachet & Frankfurt pictorial cds for 14.5.36. It then arrived in the UK in time to be loaded to Imperial Airways. This was interrupted when the "Aurora" developed engine trouble at Penang on 24th May necessitating the mail being transferred to "Brisbane" which departed the following day. This is confirmed by Melbourne 30 MY 36 arrival b/s. The quintessential Zeppelin cover to Australia with only three commercial Hindenburg items recorded to this destination. The contents of the letter adds to this extraordinary item reading "We saw the arrival of the Hindenburg the day before last, she arrived about 5 o'clock just as dawn was breaking and really Eve I have never seen a more wonderful sight, she was all light [sic] up and looked simply marvellous with the blue sky in the back ground, she flew right down Broadway right over the Mc Alpin and we had a wonderful view of her from our windows, Evan was awake from 2.30 waiting for her, he was so thrilled when she did arrive. Don is arranging to have this letter sent back by her & then mailed from Germany". A lovely exhibition item in good cond. Ex Perry (Back Cover)
