1936 (22nd Aug) Imperial Airways Australia to England flight in the Short S17 Kent "Scipio". Crashed at Bay of Mirabella near Crete WITH 2 deaths & 9 injured. Some mail was salvaged incl this Edmunds Bros & Co Melbourne company cover having the 70mm boxed cachet "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION IN SEA WATER I.S." front & back. "ER Officially Sealed in the Returned Letter Section, London Postal Service" seals x 4 used on the back to secure. Complete with typed slip of paper; "The accompanying item was salvaged from the wreck of the Air Liner "Scipio". Returned Letter Section, London." Stamps missing but partial Melbourne cds's. "Recd.
