1932 (2nd Jan) Germany to Australia flight by Captain Hans Bertram cover being one of only 40 carried on this epic flight from Berlin to Melbourne with 12 intermediate steps each represented by a stamp & pmk. The last three postmarks for Batavia on 6th May, Wyndham on 6th July & Sydney 15th November reflect the delay caused by a forced landing on the NW coast of WA in which Bertram & his co-pilot Adolph Klausmann nearly died of starvation in the 6 weeks before they were found. Bertram finally sourced parts & returned to the aircraft to make repairs before flying on to Perth via Broome arriving 24th September. He made improved repairs & then flew to Kalgoorlie before leaving for Adelaide arriving on 3rd October. Official "BERTRAM ATLANTIS EXPEDITION" envelope pilot signed across "Lost 53 days in the Wild Nor-West of Australia" map cachet. This cover being one of only 7 signed by Bertram with Sieger Cert. (1998). Scarce & in excellent condition considering the experience - superb! AAMC 232, Cat. $1750 + 100% premium for signed cover. (2008)
