1940 (22nd Jan) KNILM Dutch East Indies to Australia crash cover. Unusual in having been flown across the Pacific on a Pan Am Clipper service before transfer to a Dutch operated flight. "United Air Lines" company env addressed to Sydney with missing original US stamps but Chicago JAN 3 1940 pmk visible. "RECOVERED FROM LOST FLYING BOAT" cachet in black with neighbouring pair of 3d Postage Dues tied by GPO Sydney 25 JA 40 cds! Addressee was Nancy Bird, the famous Australian aviatrix. The Lockheed crashed in Bali, killing 8 people on board with one survivor. 35lbs of mail recovered. AAMC 888, Cat. $350++
