1936 (21st Aug) London to Sydney cover with 3d x 2 & 1/- x 2 KGV tied by London machine & cds. This cover involved in the famed "Desert incident" where on 29th Aug the Imperial Airways "Horsa" flight IE473 overshot Bahrain Aerodrome by 100kms at night, a consequence of the airfield lights not having been switched on & the pilots becoming lost. They made a forced-landing in the desert at Salwa Wells. The aircraft was found 40 hours later with mail & passengers being flown out by RAF Mail to connect with IE474-75, the service now delayed by five days. Only three covers from this major incident are recorded to Australia (another from GB & from Belgium). Indistinct Melbourne b/s. Worn cond full of character! Ex Perry (plate 3)
