1937 (9th Feb) Los Angeles to Oakland United Airlines Doulas DC3 crashed in San Francisco Bay due to co-pilots microphone falling between the control column & seat support. All crew & passengers died. All mail was recovered in a very wet condition & forwarded the following day with "DAMAGE DUE TO AIR MAIL INTERRUPTION NEAR SAN FRANCISCO CALIF. FEB 10 1937" in red. Cover with Santa Barbara Calif. slogan but understandably stamps missing. Incls original typed witty personal correspondence & a $5.00 "birthday" cheque that was also enclosed. Also a photo of the aircraft being recovered. Unusual to have the correspondence matching the cover from this disaster.
