1854 Crimean War env from the British Army in the East to "Mrs Gloag 3 Richmond Terrace Rathmines Dublin Ireland" also endorsed "from Chief Staff Vet Surg Gloag". B/S Port Office OC 23 1854 with London 17 NO 1854 arrival & Irish receiver next day. Unusual postal rate, 11d, apparently a quicker rate via Marseilles. Gloag wrote this 2 days before his 11th Hussars, Cardigan Regt, charged on the 25th with 643 horses. 332 were killed & 43 shot for wounds. Gloag did not charge but found himself with tragic duties afterwards. By November that year he was vet to the HQ staff. Worn cond. A possible thematic "veterinary" item.
