1954 (25th Dec) BOAC Boeing Stratocruiser flying from London to New York via Prestwick Airport near Scotland crashed & caught fire as it came into land. All 28 passengers & crew were killed. Most of the 250 postal bags were recovered but majority was in poor cond. This envelope has a London 23 DEC 1954 slogan cancel (missing stamps) & addressed to New York with boxed "SALVAGED MAIL AIRCRAFT CRASH PRESTWICK 25-12-54" cachet struck in violet. Also a previously unrecorded cachet used on these mails reading "Postage Stamp Detached Before Receipt at Bowling Green Station Customs.......JAN 12 1954" also in violet. This is not recorded in either Nierinck or AAM cats, Burnt & water stained.
