1935 (23rd Oct) England to Italy to England flown by Kingsford Smith & T Pethybridge in the "Lady Southern Cross". Addressed to Kingsford Smith with 12 line cachet on reverse signed by B Shiel & numbered "16" of 49. This was one of the covers carried to England on Imperial & Dutch Air Lines by B Sheil & transferred to Kingsford Smith for this flight hence the 2d KGV tied by Darwin NT cds dated 3 OC 35. However after severe storms & ice damage the plane was forced to land & the flight was abandoned at Brindisi in Italy. After a "patch-up" job he flew the plane back to England to prepare for a further record attempt. This cover arrived too late to be carried on the fateful flight when Kingsford Smith was lost over the Bay of Bengal. Thus this was the last cover carried by Kingsford Smith. VG cond. AAMC 545. Cat. $650
