South Africa 1918 stampless cover (very tatty) with "ON NAVAL SERVICE OFFICIAL…" in violet, with enclosure (also damaged) from Durban H.M.W/T Station, Jacobs with long typewritten letter to "my dear mother", mentioning "you will be interested to hear that I have at last been promoted to Lieutenant R.N.V.R.... my salary is now £400 per annum with reasonable maintenance allowance which usually covers ones living expenses & enables one to live pretty well". A valuable insight into conditions in South Africa & attitudes to the Boers, & commenting on the news from the Western Front. A good read, despite the damage!
