1946 Manawatu River Train Crash env from Wellington to Napier which has the stamp washed off but with a cancel of 19 AU 1946. The back has been resealed by the Post Office with stamp selvedges & a clear crisp strike of the violet cachet, "DAMAGED THROUGH IMMERSION IN MAMAWATU RIVER RAILWAY ACCIDENT" applied. About 4.10am on the morning of 20th August 1946 the goods train from Palmerston North to Napier plunged 60ft into the swollen Manawatu River when struck by a landslide. Both the driver & the fireman were killed. A fine example from this incident.
